When you adopt a dog, you take responsibility for the animal. You’re responsible for feeding the dog, taking it to the vet when it’s sick, and making sure it stays happy and healthy. Sometimes, people adopt a dog and realize that they don’t have the time or energy to give the dog what it needs. Then, they have the option to surrender the dog to a shelter for a small fee. While it is sad that the dog has to go back to a shelter, it’s better for the dog in the long run if their owner won’t be able to take care of them.
Alexandra Drew is one of those people who adopted a dog and then learned that she couldn’t properly care for him.
In early 2016, Drew adopted a border collie named Richter from the Humane Society of Sarasota County. She owned Richter for six months, and during that time, she was “too busy with work” to feed him. Her excuse is very flimsy—after all, it only takes a few seconds to put some Kibble into a dog bowl. Because of his owner’s cruelty, Richter became horribly emaciated.
After six months, Drew knew that she couldn’t keep the dog anymore. But instead of just surrendering the dog and paying a $30 fee, she tried to trick the shelter into thinking he was abandoned. She said that Richter was a stray, but Richter’s microchip quickly revealed that she was the real owner.
The Humane Society of Sarasota County took Richter in, and Drew was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.
Lieutenant Daniel Tutko, one of the officers who handled the case, told Fox 13 News:
“[Richter] was very thin. You could see the outline of the rib cage, you could see the bones protruding from its back. It was in bad shape. She continued to try and put blame on someone else, as to why the dog was in the shape that it was.”
The vets at the Humane Society of Sarasota County took care of Richter and got him back up to a healthy weight. Once he was healthy, they put him up for adoption. He quickly found a wonderful new home!
Richter suffered greatly at the hands of a cruel woman who did not give him the care he needed. Thankfully, Richter has found a great new home with an owner who will give him the love and attention that he deserves.
